PRESS RELEASE
Banff – June 12, 2011
Angel Entertainment Corporation partners Bob Crowe and Wally Start announced today the completion of their acquisition of one of western Canada’s busiest post-production houses. The company, M.G. Media Group Inc., has been rebranded as Bamboo Shoots.
To mark the occasion, Crowe and Start introduced the inaugural Bamboo Shoots Documentary Prize. The $25,000 prize consists of $5000 cash and a $20,000 facilities and services package. Open to all Canadian filmmakers, the prize will be awarded to the best feature documentary proposal in the field of social justice, international development, politics, or the environment.
In addition to the cash and facilities package, Bamboo Shoots has arranged a ‘first look’ deal with Union Pictures. The Toronto-based distributor has shown a strong commitment to documentaries with the theatrical releases of Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould and the Hot Docs hit Best Worst Movie.
“The pool of development and production funds for documentaries has dramatically shrunk in recent years,” said Start, adding, “We hope that this annual award will be the catalyst for one more great Canadian film that might otherwise not have been made.”
Bamboo Shoots co-president, Crowe, said, “We know how difficult it is to attach those first dollars to even the best of proposals. We’re delighted to be able to make a small contribution back to the factual production community that gave us, and Angel Entertainment, our start.”
Guidelines and submission requirements for the prize will be posted at www.bambooshoots.ca on June 30, 2011.
Bamboo Shoots, located in Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan, is a full spectrum post-production house featuring eight fully staffed HD edit suites. Bamboo consistently meets all international standards for delivery of broadcast-quality television.
Angel Entertainment produces award winning feature films and dramatic television. Recent credits include the internationally broadcast supernatural crime series Rabbit Fall and the feature film Stained, which opened in ‘Canadian Perspectives’ at Cannes.
Bob Crowe and Wally Start of Angel Entertainment Corporation are the new owners and Co-Presidents of Bamboo Shoots, formerly M.G. Media Group Inc. of Saskatoon and Regina.
M.G. Media Group Inc. was founded in 1994 by the late Ken Adolph with his wife and partner, Dianne. Since then the company has steadily grown establishing a strong infrastructure of videographers, editors, producers and technicians to become one of western Canada’s largest and busiest video production and post-production companies.
Regarding the purchase of the company, Crowe commented, “The collaboration between Angel Entertainment and Bamboo Shoots began back in the early Media Group days. MG finished and delivered our very first projects, and Ken taught us so much about series delivery. Today, we know that Angel’s projects are finished to the highest standards; after all, we’ve delivered to some of the most demanding broadcasters in Europe and North America.”
Added Start, “Apart from post-production, we now have a vehicle to produce factual, lifestyle, even variety and performing arts programs. Angel Entertainment is focused exclusively on scripted drama and comedy, so for years we had been shelving all those great ideas that didn’t fit Angel’s core competency. Bamboo Shoots will be the perfect complement to Angel.”
The growth of both companies created a need for a new home which they found in Saskatoon’s vibrant Broadway neighborhood. Now happily housed at 639 Main Street with Angel Entertainment, Bamboo Shoots features eight non linear digital editing suites delivering HD-SDI uncompressed video, a full duplication facility, a technical/IT department, and a 3 to 6 camera mobile unit. The company provides full service production and post from concept to completion for everything from commercials to corporate video and feature films to television series as well as mobile production and live webcasting services.
In Regina, the Bamboo Shoots production and post facility is located at 1911 Park Street.
Angel Entertainment produces award winning feature films and dramatic television. Recent credits include the internationally broadcast supernatural crime series Rabbit Fall and the feature Stained.
